The Federal Sequestration of funds is a concern for our organization that provides human services with mostly federal dollars.
Sequestration is an across the board cut to federal programs implemented because Congress and the President could not agree to a budget that addresses the issues and targets outlined in the 2011 Budget Control Act.
These federal funding reductions impact our Head Start/Early Head Start Programs as well as our Senior Nutrition Program that provides Meals-on-Wheels services to our home-bound frail and elderly throughout Alger and Marquette Counties.
The sequestration required a reduction of 5.27% of our funding which had to be made up over the balance of the fiscal year which ends September 30th.
In an effort to meet the reductions of the sequestration, we shortened our Head Start school year by 3 weeks which placed some of our parents in a bad spot having to scramble to find day-care earlier than scheduled as well as lay-off our education and transportation staff earlier than anticipated. Not all of the staff have enough earnings to qualify for Unemployment Insurance and those employees were especially hit hard with the early closure.
Our agency is also requiring other full time employee’s to take the equivalent of seven furlough days without pay over the course of the summer.
It is so important that our Congress and President agree to a budget that achieves the necessary spending reductions and/or revenue increases to meet the requirements of the 2011 Budget Control Act. This is essential so that programs that would likely not be targeted for cuts like Head Start and Senior Meals don’t have to bear these unnecessary and undesirable reductions.
Lets all keep our fingers crossed that our federally elected Congress and President can figure this out soon. We hope that they can do what is right for our country.
