Senior Meals

The Senior Nutrition Programs
Congregate & Home Delivered Meals (Meals-on-Wheels)

Adequate nutrition is critical to the health, functioning, and quality of life for our aging seniors. It is essential for healthy aging and the prevention or delay of chronic diseases and disease related disabilities. All senior meals served by amcab meet or exceed one-third of the USDA Recommended Daily Allowances of nutrients needed for older adults. Diabetic meals and chopped, ground, and pureed meals are also available upon request.

AMCAB offers two types of Senior Nutrition Programs:

1). Congregate Dining Program
Come enjoy a healthy, nutritionally balanced lunch at one of AMCAB’s fifteen sites (congregate sites) across Alger and Marquette counties. Just call 228-6522 ext 302 to reserve your meal one day in advance. Suggested donation – $3.50.

Do you qualify?
If you are age 60 years or older, or if you are the spouse of a person age 60 years or older, you qualify to attend any of our sites located throughout Alger and Marquette County.

2).Home Delivered Meals or “Meals on Wheels”
A hot meal delivered to seniors who are unable to leave their homes and are unable to prepare nutritious meals. Suggested donation: $3.50 per meal.

We also provide “Meals While You Heal” for seniors who have been recently released from a hospital or nursing home. In addition to providing healthy and well-balanced meals, the meal deliverers also provide an important service by checking on the homebound seniors when they deliver the meals.

Do you qualify for Home Delivered Meals?

Eligibility requirements for Home Delivered Meals include:

  • You or your spouse must be 60 years of age of older.
  • You must be homebound and cannot leave your home without assistance.
  • You are unable to prepare meals.

Call 228-6522 ext 302 for more information or to see if you or someone you care about qualifies.

What do these programs cost?

The suggested per meal donation is $3.50 for each Congregate or Home Delivered meal, but no one is ever denied service due to their inability to donate. Family members are also encouraged to donate on behalf of their loved ones. Since Federal and State funding does not cover the full cost to operate the Senior Meal Programs, the generosity of program participants and their families is crucial. Without these donations amcab will not be able to serve every senior in need of Congregate or Home Delivered Meals.

Volunteering for Senior Meals
AMCAB Senior Meals Programs serve over 100,000 meals a year to senior in Alger and Marquette Counties, helping those seniors live longer, healthier, more enjoyable lives. Volunteers are needed in a variety of ways to continue providing these important meals.

Volunteers are needed to host Congregate Meal Sites, to help prepare and package meals, and to sometimes deliver meals. Just as important, volunteers are needed to give a smile and words of kindness to brighten the senior’s day.

Whether you have an hour or many hours to volunteer, you are needed by your local seniors. Training and support is provided by AMCAB staff. Please call the office at 228-6522 ext 301if you’d like to volunteer.

A donation of $76/month will feed meals for a senior for a month

A donation of $455 will provide Senior Meals for six months for a senior

A donation of $910 will sponsor a full year of home delivered meals for an area senior
